Scientists Develop Permanent Magnet Radiation Shielding for Spacecraft

Scientists may finally have answer to problem that would have killed anyone standing on Moon in 1972

A team of scientists from Italy and Germany has tested permanent magnet radiation shielding for spacecraft, packing 1,482 neodymium-iron-boron magnets into an array that deflected 20% of solar particles. Unlike superconducting magnets, the setup needs no cryogenic cooling or fail-safe power. It arrives as Nasa weighs deep space radiation protection for Mars and Artemis missions, where a 1972 solar flare between Apollo 16 and 17 would have delivered a fatal dose to lunar astronauts.
