Za kuhinjsko mizo majhnega stanovanja v Sankt Peterburgu po licih Marije lijejo solze. Ne samo, da ji je ruska vojska sporočila, da je bil njen oče ubit na fronti, izvedela je tudi, da se je pred smrtjo poročil z neznanim, 22 let mlajšim dekletom, ki je po njegovi smrti dobilo tudi vse premoženje.
