Nigeria’s money supply drops slightly to N123trn

…as currency outside bank drops 3% •Credit to govt, private sector shrinks By Elizabeth Adegbesan Nigeria’s money supply (M²) fell by 0.8 percent month-on-month (MoM) to N123.4 trillion in January 2025 from N124.4 trillion in December 2025, indicating low liquidity in the banking system despite a decline in interest rate. Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Open Market Operations (OMO) sales fell by 99.9 percent to N0.01 billion in January 2025 from N10.01 billion in December 2024. Also, credit to government and private sector fell by 1.2 percent and 0.4 percent respectively. The CBN stated that the decline in money supply was due to the decline in currency outside the banking system by 3.0 percent to N3.3 trillion from N3.4 trillion in December 2024.
