France Recalls Historical Tradition of Alcohol in School Lunches for Children

France is commemorating the anniversary of a parental revolt against the tradition of serving children half a liter of wine, beer, or cider daily with school lunches, a practice that continued until 1956. Doctors and parents once approved of alcohol as healthy nutrition and a defense against tuberculosis before Prime Minister Mendès France ended the tradition.

Půllitr vína, piva nebo cideru denně jako součást školního oběda. Pro francouzské školáky šlo do roku 1956 o realitu, kterou schvalovali lékaři i rodiče. Alkohol platil za zdravou výživu a obranu před tuberkulózou. Utnutí této tradice premiérem Mendèsem Francem vyvolalo celonárodní vzpouru. Definitivní zákaz alkoholu na všech školách nakonec prosadil až prezident François Mitterrand v září 1981.
