Ve čtvrtek 30. července Karel Řehka zahájil svou politickou činnost jako kandidát Starostů. Náčelníkem generálního štábu už sice není, nicméně až do 31. srpna 2026 zůstává dle dřívějších informací profesionálním příslušníkem Armády ČR. To mu ale nezabránilo, aby se přihlásil do boje o senátorské křeslo za obvod Plzeň-město. Jde o novou situaci, řešit ji musel i ministr obrany.
