Cape Town Researchers Develop Low-Cost System to Purify Polluted River Water

Cape Town project turns polluted river water into 36,000L of clean irrigation daily

University of Cape Town researchers are transforming heavily polluted water from South Africa’s Stiebeuel River into irrigation water using stones, sand and heat-treated wood. The off-grid Water Hub treats around 36,000 litres daily and removes about 99% of toxins. The project is helping Langrug residents grow food while offering a potential climate-resilience model.
