RUBBER-STAMPED: Zero deviations — the record of Cape Town’s planning tribunal in 1,328 rulings

From 1 July 2025 to 31 July 2026, Cape Town’s Municipal Planning Tribunal (MPT) presided over 1,328 recorded cases. Daily Maverick’s analysis of these cases reveals that the MPT, which is supposed to be an independent body, did not issue a single ruling that went against the recommendations of the City’s planning department.
