Two years after its opening, Mexico's Maya Train, intended to revitalize the country's impoverished south, is reportedly running almost empty. Hotels lack guests, and communities along the route still await basic services like electricity and water.

Despite ambitious plans, Mexico's 1,500 km Maya Train project is struggling, with ticket revenues covering only a fraction of operational costs and hotels along the route remaining largely empty. The project has also reportedly worsened the lives of indigenous communities.

A judge has ordered a halt to construction on the Playa del Carmen-Tulum section of the Maya Train project in Mexico, a win for activists concerned about the environmental impact on this sensitive area.

On Wednesday, Tourism Minister Josefina Rodríguez reported that Mexico's international tourist numbers increased almost 9% annually in January and that 13,166 of them rode the Maya Train, up from 8,980 in January 2025.
