A deputy vice-chancellor at Atiba University ignited public backlash after describing protesting students as 'intellectually bankrupt' during a demonstration over changes to the institution's law program.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to Atiba University in Oyo State. The ultimatum demands a resolution to the crisis preventing students and graduates of its Law program from progressing to the Nigerian Law School.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Atiba University faced backlash for labeling protesting law students as “intellectually bankrupt” amid demonstrations against a ten-year moratorium on the university's law program.

Atiba University has been prohibited from offering its law program for a period of 10 years by legal councils. This decision comes as the Law School approves five new law faculties elsewhere, placing Atiba University under a moratorium.
